PRASA Western Cape Re-Signalling Project

The project involves a complete upgrade of the Cape Town region sub-urban lines, including:

  • Implementation of a new interlocking system
  • Centralised Traffic Control (CTC)
  • Civil works and Perway (Permanent Way)
  • Overhead Track Equipment (OHTE)
  • Establishment of a new Train Traffic Control Centre
  • Design, supply, and installation of signalling equipment
  • Associated civil, track, electrical, and telecommunications works
Transnet Projects – Perway Works & Machinery


1. Ballast Tamping and Regulation:

  • Deployment of ballast tamping machines to align and stabilise the track, ensuring optimal track geometry and long-term performance.
  • Use of ballast regulators to evenly distribute and profile the ballast, providing adequate support for the tracks and maintaining proper drainage.


2. Formation and Embankment Rehabilitation:

  • Formation rehabilitation to restore the trackbed and improve stability.
  • Centralised Traffic Control (CTC)


3. Turnout Replacement:

  • Implementation of a new interlocking system
  • Embankment rehabilitation to strengthen and stabilise railway embankments.


4. Installation:

  • Replacement of track turnouts to ensure smooth and reliable track switching operations.


5. Ballast Boxing, Lifting, and Tamping:

  • Boxing of ballast to maintain the correct track profile.
  • Lifting and tamping to adjust track elevation and ensure proper ballast compaction.


6. Welding and X-ray:

  • Welding of rail joints for seamless track connections.
  • X-ray inspection to ensure the integrity and safety of welded joints.
